Data Governance, are ae really concerned? – Follow-up discussion of the 55th Statistical Commission

An upcoming UPDI event will take place as part of the International Association of Official Statistics (IAOS) and the International Statistical Institute (ISI) 2024 Mexico Conference, in Mexico City.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the first global social contract ever, dramatically expanded the boundaries of official statistics, demanding a huge amount of statistical and conceptual development.  To meet this challenge, the statistical community came together in an independent process to develop global indicator framework, harnessing both traditional and novel data sources, with a particular focus on leaving no one behind. Together, elements from the 2030 Agenda have highlighted the importance of data management and data governance. The 2030 Agenda has passed the half-way point, and it is clear the SDGs are off track. The world needs to accelerate progress; a key element of this acceleration in the digitalisation of data. This transition will need to be supported by well-structured data architecture and good data governance.

The event will be a follow-up discussion of the side-event held during the 55th session of the UN Statistical Commission on data governance.

Key note speakers are Georges-Simon Ulrich, Director General of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office and Chair of the UN Statistical Commission (confirmed); Miosotis Rivas Peña, General Director of the National Statistics Office of the Dominican Republic and Chair of the Statistical Conference of the Americas (confirmed); Malar Veerappan, Senior Data Scientist at the World Bank; Cristina Hernández, General Director of Scitum (confirmed). This panel will be moderated by Benjamin Rothen, Ambassador, Swiss Federal Statistical Office.
